Hornsey Win 2026 Middlesex Cup - Report by P.W. Smith
The teams that came second and third in this season's MCCL Premier division came together to contest this season's Middlesex Cup final.
Teddington won the toss and asked Hornsey to bat, which with the benefit of hindsight possibly proved to be the most decisive moment of the final.
Hornsey opened against a strong Teddington attack with a pretty inexperienced pairing at first XI level. However, Wyn Bliss (56) and Joshua Bennett (59) both played superbly, first blunting all that the Teddington could throw at them and then going on the attack themselves. The Hornsey openers put together a match winning 116 run opening partnership in a little over 20 overs, and this turned out to be the critical portion of the game.
Teddington will feel they did not exploit the bowling conditions as well as they would have liked, especially in the critical first hour. Nothing should be taken away from the Hornsey openers who laid the firm foundation for a Hornsey score that felt slightly above par for the conditions. The opening partnership allowed skipper Harry Killoran (61*), first with Shiv Patel (17), and then Tom Lyttle (12*) to push Hornsey to a creditable score of 228-4 from their 45 overs.
Teddington usual batting order was disrupted by absences, but I think it is fair to say that the Teddington reply never really got off the ground. Alasdair Pollock, as he did in the semi-final, stepped in to replace his missing brother at the top of the order. He turned out to be really the only Teddington batsman to put up any resistance. His 94* was obviously the backbone of a very tame Teddington batting performance.

Credit should be given to Hornsey bowlers - Niall Perfect and Nii-Amaa Ollennu, who together with the magnificent on the day Patrick Moore, to put Teddington batsmen under constant pressure. Horney's bowlers used the pitch and conditions very effectively never allowing Teddington to get any sort of real foothold in the game. Pick of the bowlers was undoubtedly Patrick Moore, who bowled his 9 overs straight through taking 4-40 from his nine overs, and beat the batmen's outside edges so often that those figures scarcely do his performance justice.

For most of the Teddington innings the destination of the cup was really in little doubt. However, there was a sting in the tail when #11 Andrew Brewster (17) joined Pollock in a 10th wicket partnership of 51.

All in all Hornsey outplayed Teddington and everyone who watched the game will agree that Hornsey are very worthy Middlesex Cup Champions for 2026.
