HORNSEY WON BY 10 WICKETS
A cool & blustery evening greeted Hornsey U13s as they embarked on the 2019 league campaign against Primrose Hill Lions. Toby, who captained the side calmly and skilfully all evening, won the toss & elected to bowl first, opening with James who bowled an accurate first over - including a wicket which was called a No Ball by the umpire.
Rafi took an early over & then Jasmin continued in tandem with James. They bowled really well as a pair - tight lines & very little for the openers to hit. The batters opened up with a few boundaries as the spinners came on & dropped short, but Hornsey's first wicket of the league season was a run out, Toby calming throwing to Joe who took off the bails.
Orlando (Primrose Hill Number 3) is a formidable player, and he showed his intent by striking Jayan and Jacob for some brutal blows, including a six over square leg. Fred bowled a nice over, but Orlando seemed intent on hitting out regardless of who was bowling. Having hit 3 boundaries in a row off Jacob, he was undone by a much quicker delivery from which took Orlando's middle stump. Much relief all round that Orlando was gone for 29.
Primrose Hill lost wickets steadily, 2 more coming to Jacob as Toby rotated the bowling nicely, bowling 2 tidy overs himself. Jacob, Jasmine & James closed the innings and everyone agreed that we'd kept the score down remarkably well with short boundaries. Archie was very good in the in-field, cutting off a number of boundaries, and stopping quick singles but the whole team fielded well.
Primrose Hill thought they had enough runs....their scorer was overhead saying that they didn't think Hornsey could chase 150....
Hornsey's reply was pretty astonishing. We had a nicely planned batting order with Fred, Archie, Toby & James all in the key top 6 positions - ready to score quickly etc. But Jayan & Joe opened the innings and just batted, and batted, and batted. It was quite brutal stuff at times, as Primrose Hill tried all 10 players (excluding their wicketkeeper only) to try and break the partnership.
Quick singles, some great drives, pulls & cuts - the short boundaries helped. The rotation of the strike really disrupted the bowling effort, and Jayan hit 9 4's in his innings of 55. Joe hit 3 6's and 9 4's in his 72. We contemplated retiring both batsmen when the winning line was in sight, but it was so dark out there that we felt it was a bit unfair to send a new player in - it was not easy to see the pink ball at all. The other waiting batsman were anyway cheering every run, and to finish the match with a boundary summed up the game neatly.
A comprehensive win, played in a very nice spirit and there were warm handshakes & congratulations all-round. We may not see an unbroken partnership of 149 again, the irony being that Joe & Jayan opened only because we wanted to pack the middle order a little bit..!
A 10 wicket win, a scoring rate of 9 per over, tight bowling & fielding and some very smart captaincy should give us all a sense of optimism for the season ahead.
We are, for one game at least, top of the league!
Well done Hornsey U13.
