In Loving Memory: Graham Allen (23.10.1964 – 05.10.2026)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and outstanding Hornsey cricketer, Graham Allen.

Graham joined the club in 1987 and became an indispensable member of whichever side he played in, turning out for every team from the 1st XI down to the 5th XI. He was a true gentleman and will be fondly remembered as a man who never raised his voice or exchanged an angry word with anybody, whether a teammate, an opponent or someone in the world beyond cricket. He was an exemplar of how the game should be played, at any level.

His record speaks for itself: 712 matches and 16,090 runs at an average of 27.09, with 17 hundreds and 84 fifties and a highest score of 127 not out. With the ball he took 220 wickets at 19.88, with a best of 6/51 and five five-wicket hauls, and he held 137 catches.

After a distinguished Hornsey career, this season he moved on to play for Middlesex Over 60s and enjoyed a very successful first season. Graham was the most welcoming of members to players of all abilities. He encouraged and mentored the juniors coming through and always led by example. It is no exaggeration to say that we will be fortunate ever to see another player like him in our ranks.

Beyond cricket, Graham loved music: prog rock, jazz fusion and pretty much everything in between. We enjoyed many robust arguments over the merits of punk versus technically proficient jazz, and never arrived at a satisfactory conclusion. In recent years he enjoyed travelling to historic places across Europe and, for reasons best known to himself, developed a fascination with East Germany and the Stasi.

A full obituary will follow.

Graham, we miss you madly. I shall miss our boundary walks and our discussions on the state of the game. Rest in peace, my friend.

James Chapman, Chairman
