Winchmore Hill won by 23 runs

Last Thursday saw Hornsey getting into the swing of modern times with their first go at playing themselves into a multi-million pound 20/20 game as we took on Premiership side Winchmore Hill!

We turned up not quite sure what to expect and were confronted by a team that looked straight out of the IPL all dressed in black kit and it was then that we found out we would be playing with a yellow ball not your conventional red one! Anyway we donned the more traditional whites and took to the field first.

A good opening spell from Joel and Oli set us up well, helped with some good fielding we made it difficult to score and frustration soon got to the batsmen and we picked up a couple of wickets through tight bowling and fielding. After a tight start we let Winchmore Hill get away for a couple of overs around the halfway stage, but a decisive bit of captaincy from our new 20/20 skipper Oli Yew, bringing on 20/20 specialists Matt Williams and myself brought the run rate back down and we picked up a couple of quick wickets including that of their dangerman, former England cricketers son Jim Gatting. Tim Wayne must also have special mention as his spell of 4 overs for 31 really brought the shutters down and provided a steady trickle of wickets which made it hard for them to pick up momentum, this was also helped by a fine over being bowled by Joel again in the last over of their innings.

A fine bowling and fielding display kept the hosts to the modest total of 145, a very gettable target to chase down! The men in black were not happy that this lower division side had made it such hard work for them and frustration was boiling over....as many of their England lookalikes showed!

We got off to a great start with the bat, 14 runs were smashed off the first over and if the DJ had turned up he would have injured his mixing finger turning the music on and off for every boundary Matt William sent crashing to the boundary. Phil Holbrook batted well with Matt and they set the game up for us to win, Matt was eventually dismissed for a very good 43 and Phil was sent on his way after a solid 31. After this opening stand we were down to needing a run a ball to grab what would have been a great victory, some solid batting from Chet also contributed. However the 20/20 atmosphere got the better of the side and after one or two tight overs, batsmen started to play some rather rash shots with a bit too much Kevin Pietersen flare and we started to lose wickets and the run rate started to creep up on us leaving the lower order with a bit too much to do.

In the end we ended on 122 all out in the last over, it was a very good effort by all and also a good laugh. Hornsey may not be challenging anyone in the IPL next season but certainly a few of the Hornsey players might justify a 500 grand draft.....! Lets hope next year we can earn the club some money!

Well done to all,
