Hornsey 3rd XI V North London 3rd XI
North London 178 for 10, 56 overs Bruce 61-4 Joseph 41-4
Hornsey 180 for 5, 24 overs Duberry 41, Jermotte 37 Bruce 42
Hornsey win by 5 wickets
Hornsey third team managed keep the wheels on with another win after a spell of John Lee Augustyn riding at the start of July.
Winning the toss and putting North London into bat Hornsey put in a Denis Menchov like stage 16 performance, slow and timid. Wickets fell slowly through out the innings as Bruce and Giles opened, Bruce picking up the North London overseas player who had scored runs against us earlier in the season Giles their captain. But it was hard going Giles being replaced after eight overs (8/2/24/1) for Duberry back from injury after his aggressive spell agains Wembley and looking for a repeat performance. It was not to be the same as the pitch offered little pace assistance Duberry picked up a solitary wicket (9/1/33/1). Bruce however was being made to work hard turning in over after over of economical bowling, all "on the stumps" and picking up wickets. Despite one blip, which was dually dealt by North Londons number three Raza and can lay claim to the biggest six at St Aloysius. So into the mix came Joseph who refrained from bowling his now customary three opening overs of rubbish and was rewarded with a steady stream of wickets, including the very last ball as Grylls top scored for North London with 26 and Jospeh his fourth wicket, Joseph returning 11/2/41/4. It was Bruce who deservedly took the applause as he zombie marched his way off the field 56 overs of the innings gone having bowled all 28 from the uphill end procuring four wickets and an economy rate of 2.18.
So onto the Hornsey innings a Mark Cavendish style race across the line, Dubbery and Dr Peters opening the innings. Duberry set about the North London attack hitting sixes and fours around the ground, eight overs in Hornsey were 50 runs up when disaster struck, Dr Peter bowled for 6 Duberry following shortly for 41 with a somewhat dubious boundary catch nevertheless it was a stage win for Hornsey. Were Hornsey about to crash like a 2007 Cavendish tour performance, well Thomas and Joseph had a go at it but Jermotte had other ideas grafting a tidy 37 before being bowled for the fifth wicket the score on 164 after 24 overs, a second stage win for Hornsey as he had built a 68 run partnership with man of the moment Bruce looking in good touch on 38. With Sherlock now at the crease in the 23rd over North London setting a close field too him, third ball faced Sherlock spanked a straight six and proceeded to end the game with a 6 ball 12 runs not out and victory in the 25th over, another stage win with Bruce rounding off the 4th stage win with 43 not out.
It looks unlikely Hornsey can take the yellow jersey from Twickenham but a Cadel Evans place is still achievable, can the pellaton launch us there?
