Hornsey Cricket Club 3rd Team v South Hampstead CC on Sat 19 Aug 2006 at 13:30
Hornsey Cricket Club Won 4 wickets
South Hampstead Joeled Out.
The 3rd XI virtually assured themselves of Division 2 cricket next after a season dabbling with relegation with a good win against struggling South Hamsptead on a very green wicket at the Peter May ground in Walthamstow.
South Hampstead had the right idea on a difficult wicket, throwing the bat at most things in their half, but with wicket taking deliveries just around the corner it was only a matter before wickets fell. Joel Gregory, now operating off only a five pace run up with only a marginal loss in pace recorded the sensational figures of 22.3-7-69-9.
Only the 16th time in the 136 year history of the club has anyone taken 9 wickets in an innings.
Helped enormously by deft catching behind the wicket, Disco (Richard Chalrton) x2 and Mark Allen x1 making amends from the previous week. A total of 7 catches, unprecedented for the 3rd team this season, included 2 caught and bowled and a champagne catch at deep deep fine leg from Giles. The bowling at the other end was ordinary and never looked like taking wickets! For the record the one wicket Joel didn't take was the second to fall this was a feather light touch on the top of off stump from Bruce, so the 10-for was never really on the cards.
In reply, the run chase was always likely to be tricky. In the end, we got there with six wickets down. We wobbled at 59 for 4 but then Joel Gregory making good early use of the chinese cut and the inside edge capped a memorable match with 63. Alastair Thomas batted through the whole innings virtually, for a vital 39 not out, 124 balls and 155 minutes. Not at his fluent best, but not out at the end.
Just what we needed with a good late cameo by Mark Allen (15) rolling back the years with flicks off his legs and flowing cover drives.
A fantastic individual effort from Joel and suitable way for Captain Peters to celebrate his 40th birthday.
Classic 1980s kit from Mark, skin tight whites and "flowerpot" style white sunhat and pads with metal buckles.
