Hornsey Cricket Club 3rd Team v Brentham CC on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at
Match was Drawn Winning Draw 4 Points
Hornsey denied win by 10 men Brentham.
A dogged performance by Hornsey to acquire the 4 points required to secure division two status for 2006.
Captain Peters lost the toss and was put into bat. A toss that the Brentham captain was keen not to loose…having lost his teams valuables, and his a car the previous week, which Bruce was more than happy to remind him about.
Richard Charlton (92) opened and was the pick of the Hornsey batsmen and made use of a runner (Myall) who pushed both Charltons and Hornseys run rate on. Useful contributions from Cable (17) and Coventon (23). Hornsey were all out for 199 as George Charlton making yet another third team appearance was Barnes Wallaced out by Capps, the last wicket to fall.
If only Richard Charlton had taken a runner earlier, his ton would have taken him past James Fleming in the averages and Hornsey could have squeezed past the two hundred mark.
In the field Bruce and Giles were the only ones successful in picking up the wickets, Giles taking a wicket on his first delivery a catch to Myhill to return figures of 3–53 and taking him past 30 wickets for the season.
But it was Bruce who was the most economical 5-23, his seasons best (not surprising when not in the out field to chase and bend down to field the ball)
Hornsey used five more bowlers in a desperate attempt to bowl Brentham out but to no avail and Hornseys fielding became tardy and slow. Emmerson missing out on a legendary champagne opportunity to dismiss Capps in the slips and hand Hornsey the win. As it was the Brentham tail stood firm giving Hornsey the winning draw required and close the season.
To stay in this division was a mighty effort given the shortage of runs, wickets and negative results in the first half of the season. A change of hart on the retirement front from Bruce, a number of fifties from Disco and scores from Chapman, Welch, Coventon, Flemming, Cable and Duff (when available) helped Hornsey to post more realistic scores or chase totals in the second half of the season. Subsequently Bruce, Giles plus contribution bowlers Charlie Joseph, Myhill, Myall, Peters, Fleming, not forgetting Emmo and Chapman had something to bowl at.

Brentham away and the half-wit.
Comedy moments:
Emmerson's shot against Capps.
Emmerson's maiden at Harrow…and the wide ball, why did the batsman walk over and defend it?
Emmerson at Eastcote, fielding at deep long on rather than slip to leave the game an over early.
Brucys IQ retort with the Brentham half-wit.
