Winchmore Hill CC v Hornsey Cricket Club 3rd Team on Sat 23 Jul 2005 at
Hornsey Cricket Club Won 116 Runs - 10 points
West Country wizard Giles whips Winchmore Hill.
Even Merlin could not cast such a spell on Winchmore Hill to save them from the blistering form of Hornsey as Giles returned 8-80 to clinch a stunning victory as Hornsey delivered a result of Arthurian legend.
A green Winchmore wicket “the road” looked like it could offer something for both batsmen and bowlers. But Loosing the toss Hornsey were put into bat and early indications suggested that this was going to be a hard day.
Hornsey quikly found themselves 19-1 after 7 overs as Cable (6) struggled to fend of a good full length ball that beat him all round. Soon after Chapman (22) had holed out. Duff contributed a 22 ball 23 but Hornsey were now 65 -3 from fifteen overs.
Fresh from his previous weeks ton, Bruce came out and soon set about posting a score with healthy partnerships with northern outcast Forsyth (17) and Hornsey Legend Hemant Patel. But it was the Bruce Fleming partnership from the previous week that kick started Hornsey’s fight back putting on 58 runs for the 6th wicket with the score on 188.
Hussain (4) came and went. Leaving Peters and Fleming to attempt to post a decent score and score they did, Fleming passing fifty his first in senior cricket and then Peters for the first time in many a season. They generated a 91 run 8th wicket partnership and gave Hornsey a score of 290.
Peters (50) finally fell, Emmerson out for a golden duck and Giles ran a 5 not out to give Hornsey a total of 295 for 9. Fleming not out 56 from 65 balls.
So could Winchmore chase down the Hornsey total.
Giles opened the bowling and no one would have predicted the events that followed. Winchmore hills opener Seervaratnnam set off in predictable fashion bludgeoning the ball to the boundary but precise bowling from Giles soon had him caught behind (Chapman). Whilst the other opener Ludlam, promoted from the 4th team, successfully worked the ball to the boundary and with good running picked up 66 runs. A peach of a delivery from Giles, one of many, had him bowled.
The rest of the Winchmore team must have failed to pay their congestion charge as “the road” soon became congested with batsmen as Giles slowly ran through the Winchmore batting order. The ball moving around in the overcast conditions helping him on his way to pick up five wickets bowled, an L.B.W and two catches caught behind by Chapman. A Hornsey club and career best to eclipse his previous club and career best from the previous week.
With Forsyth chipping in to take two wickets, Hornsey had reduced Winchmore Hill to 179 all out a truly memorable 10 point victory.
So after a number of weeks of indifferant performance finally everyone contributed some where in the game; batting, bowling and in the field a tremendous team effort.
