Hornsey Cricket Club 3rd Team v Shepherds Bush CC on Sat 16 Jul 2005 at
Hornsey Cricket Club Won 78 Run - 10 (points)

Geordie Johnny Bruce hit a century and took two early wickets to help set his side on course to a 78-run win over Shepherd Bush

Whilst Nik Giles took 6-60 to restrict the visitors to 147 all out at the Peter May ground

All-rounder Bruce stepped up to the mark as his side recovered from the loss of early wickets to reach 225-5. Repairing the damage Bruce and fifteen year old James Fleming 36 not out put on a 148 run, 90 minute partnership.

Earlier Hornsey had got of to a slow start losing two wickets in the seventh over. Chapman the first to go then the captain, Peters, one of two run outs involving the opener Charlton. Charlton (20) run out looking for a an aggressive single to fine leg but despite his partner, Bruce, departing from his crease. Bruce stood his ground as both batsmen were left to watch the stumps being broken at the other end.

Bruce profited from a little bit of luck in the field as Shepherds Bush failed to hold their catches and leaked runs contributing to his 19 boundary 4‘s. Runs, which allowed Hornsey to declare at fifty overs on 225.

Giles and Bruce opened the bowling and it was the third and fourth overs that set the game up in Hornseys favour. First Bruce taking a double wicket maiden then Giles picking up a wicket maiden and setting himself up for a hat trick. Two wickets was all Bruce could manage to finish of a fine all round performance.

Despite being unable to get his hat trick Giles upped the ante sending down a number of bouncers that the Shepherd Bush batsmen struggled to deal with. But it was yorkers that picked up the first two of his six wickets. Shepherds Bush were soon 32-6 after twelve overs.

A sixth wicket partnership steadied the ship for Shepherds Bush as Sahan (47) found the boundary for 36 runs.

Chaz Joseph fresh from the under 13 team was put into the bowling attack and on his fourth delivery had the wicket of Sahan.

Hornsey were on a roll and victory was looking a certainty but not before Mayoo had spanked the ball for a number of big boundaries. However he tried once to often and set up a simple caught and bowled to Giles. One of four catches to Giles, Hussain who held onto two slip catches whilst Flaming sealed a good all-round performance by taking a sharp catch at short leg. This took Giles’s tally to six wickets his first for Hornsey and in his career.

Hornsey finally captured the last wicket fittingly caught by Peters at mid off from the bowling of Joseph.

Will Hornsey now see a change in fortunes, they now travel to Winchmore Hill for a derby game?
