Match was Drawn Winning Draw
Hornsey, mindful of current form - where results have not been favourable - with glimpses of last seasons form they were keen to take points from local rivals, Enfield.
Put into bat with a team consisting of veterans and up and coming colts Jim Chapman and Ed Waite opened the batting. With the wicket offering variable lift Hornsey were soon in trouble as Waite was caught behind with the score on 5. To the crease came Duff, keen to find form to procure player of the year, a steady 56 run partnership developed. Duff contributing 23 runs, 20 in boundaries.
This set up a veteran partnership of Chapman and Bruce who put on a 45 run partnership before Chapman was caught out on 47. Cincotta and Browne failed to trouble the score both caught out by the variable lift from the wicket. Jaz Cable came to the crease and continues to exhibit ever increasing talent as he went down the wicket to the spinner driving him along the ground for four, one of many graceful shots contributing to a healthy 40 partnership with Bruce.
Despite a vociferous appeal for Bruce caught behind and verbal unpleasantness towards umpire Duff who declined the decision. Bruce soon went on to pass 50 with a devastating 6 over long on and any talk of retirement had now been delayed for a few more matches. Bruce finally bowled for 66, which included 10 fours and a single 6.
This set up a colt partnerships of Cable and Fleming who both exhibited a fine selection of shots and quick running between the wicket, however Fleming called for a quick single with the ball in the fielders hand and it was Cable who found himself the 7th wicket.
Emmerson Jnr spanked a quick fire 22 of 18 balls as the Hornsey tail offered a further 41 runs to the innings total of 208 all out.
Hornseys bowling spell started well as Browne and Waite bowled efficiently restricting Enfield from scoring. But it was not until the eleventh over that the first wicket fell Duff taking a fine catch at square point from Browne. In the next eight overs Hornsey picked up a further three wickets for 13 runs, Waite setting himself up for a hat trick - resurrecting a previous hat trick moment at the Peter May missed by Chapman - but on this occasion it was not to be. 3 wickets falling with the Enfield score on 51.
From then on the Enfield score ticked over, with little threat to the final total. Giles & Fleming picking up a wicket each. Whilst Browne was on his way to picking up four wickets, Bruce at the other end was not having as much luck. Cincotta unable to hold onto a difficult one handed slip catch, which only managed to produce a face of thunder from Bruce that was to change further as Bruce himself was unable to hold the simplest of caught and bowled chances quoting to Duff “it’s your fault”….retirement was back on the cards.
Despite bowling changes and an offensive field, Hornsey were unable to get that last matching winning wicket and a winning draw was the final result.
