Shepards Bush v Hornsey Cricket Club 3rd Team on Sat 14 May 2005 at
Hornsey Cricket Club Lost 7 wickets
With Hornsey on a roll from the previous weeks win, this week’s game was going to be a test of character. A testing time it was, starting with selection dilemmas Darren Browns form with the bat had seen him poached/promoted to the second team. Captain Peters therefore had to call on the family Disco, Charlton Snr & Jnr to strengthen and complete the team.
After a few departure delays notably Tefsay, which was not to be his only delay in departing. Hornsey arrived five minutes before start of play lost the toss and found them selves batting. Here started a day of mixed fortunes for Hornsey.
Welch bowled first ball brought Syed and Charlton Snr together. Both keen to score runs Syed wanting to capitalise on the previous weeks fifty and Charlton keen to find early form after a few years sabbatical on the gold course. In true Hornsey style this partnership failed as Syed was bowled and Hornsey were 12 for 2. In comes Cincotta to the wicket full of enthusiasm to strike the ball, Emmerson voicing his disgust from the boundary. Cincotta and Charlton settled in and soon brought the fifty up. Chalrton producing some luscious strokes from his old locker. But it was not to be as he brought up his thirty up in thirty-nine balls before being bowled.
Duff to the wicket a measured performance as he bided his time with a nice little partnership being built with Cincotta. Shephards Bush had brough on Ali who was to prove economical and devastating to the Hornsey middle order. Duff finally falling on twenty seven from thirty one balls from seven scoring shots.
Peters and Bedford came and went at the hands of Ali offering little to the Hornsey total. Veteran Emmerson to the crease and it was soon apparent that little running was going to be occurring in the partnership, Cincotta keen to take advantage of any runs Emmorson keen to continue his mortality and devour the overs. It was never the less effective as they built up a twenty-eight run partnership. Cincotta bring up his first career fifty in one hundred and one balls before capitulating to Ali for Ali’s forth and final wicket.
Tefsay to the crease could this be another good day for the young colt? A small partnership with Emmerson bagged a further fifteen runs for the team, Emmerson finally bowled for eight. In to bat Charlton Jnr, his first senior match for Hornsey and under the watch full eye of Charlton Snr. He showed good technique against the Shepherds Bush bowlers who only marginally reduced their pace for the youngster. He played straight but was bowled by Gallichan for this fifth wicket.
The final partnership of Giles and Tefsay, could they eat a few more overs and increase the score to one eighty? Giles taking a number of balls on the pads Tefsey nursing the ball around. Giles edged one down fine leg two definite runs a call agreed by the batsmen. Never the less Tefsays ability to arrive on time to the match was enriched by his inability to depart the crease on time. Giles now standing next to Tefsay having run his two to be finally run out. The innings closed on 171. Tefsay not out thirteen.
So Hornsey had posted a score, would it be enough? Giles opened and soon had the opener out second ball. But it was short lived and Shephards Bush punished the Hornsey bowlers with Duff and Welch running up and down the wings and picking the ball from the foliage. Tefsay looked promising and gained a degree of respect from the batsmen who watched him patiently but their experience and Tefsay inexperience showed. Tefsay only able to capture a single wicket caught by Charlton snr at mid off.
Captain Peters keen to mix up the bowling in a desperate attempt to buy wickets. Cincotta failed, Welch looking to make an influence on the game picked up a quick caught and bowled from his first ball on his Hornsey bowling debut. Bedford brought into the attack and was quickly despatched bringing up Chuaucha’s fifty.
Time for Charlton Jnr, in what was to be the penultimate over to bowl. Three slips, short leg and Chuacha keen not to be dismissed by the youngster, a Maiden! Shepards Bush finally completed the chase the next over and a seven wicket win.
For Hornsey, a score wanting more runs and bowling in need of greater penetration, which may have helped the agony of this defeat. Back to the Peter May next week and a local derby game, Winchmore Hill.
