Hornsey Cricket Club 3rd Team v Barnes CC on Sat 07 May 2005 at
Hornsey Cricket Club Won 1 Wicket

Delayed by an hour due to late arrival of Barnes the game was reduced to 80 overs.

With Barnes batting first with only 9 men Hornseys task looked promising.

Barnes left handed openers started in solid fashion as Giles and Brown opened the bowling and managed to keep the run rate to a manageable level as Harrett progressively took advantage of the bad balls and looked to be taking control of the game. The weather however interjected and a ten minute break allowed Hornsey to regroup, which upon returning to the field did not look good as Harrett attacked Giles for three consecutive boundaries. Never the less it was the last of his boundaries as Giles pitched the ball wide of the off stump and uprooted his middle stump.

From then on Hornsey took control as Brown got to grips with a left & right handed batting pair, however his over restrictions prevented him from capitalising on this and Brown had to settle for the one wicket. On came Peters, an inspired piece of captaincy as he proceeded to bowl an assortment of balls; wides, full tosses, long hops but with devastating effect as three wickets fell.

Giles spell ended after eighteen overs and two wickets to be replaced with the lean and mean Tesfay who promptly tossed the ball up and bagged himself a quick wicket safely in the hands of the captain. The start of a good day for the young colt.

Barnes innings wrapped up by Myall as Aussie debutant Welch caught the final wicket.

A fine display from Hornsey in the field, Duff, Cable, Cincotta the ball founding him where ever he fielded and Syed who kept wicket for the very first time.

Hornsey batting started quickly with Welch and Syed finding easy runs with the nine man field.

It was not to last as decisions went against Hornsey and Brown found himself partnering Syed sooner than they had imagined. But it was an effective 61 run partnership. With Hornsey on 118 for 5 Syed lofted one up and his innings was over, caught, a good 53 runs. Myall was out quickly and in came Peters. An effective partnership with Brown took the score to 138 before Brown was dismissed for 33.

In came Hornsey legend Emmerson, was this to be another Emmerson winning moment....not on this occasion. Giles to the wicket to see his captain Peters bowled, the score on 146.

Tesfay took his guard......could the young colt stand up to the mark and take the pressure to procure the five runs required to win...never in doubt....a four past the keeper and a single through mid-on had Hornseys first win of the season.
