24 Apr 2009 : Hornsey U15 Club Championship V Southgate Adelaide - first round
Southgate 96-7 (David Reed 3-15, Tom Stevens 1-10)
Hornsey 98-4 (Liam Baker 51 ret, Alfie Beswick 23*)
Playing Hornsey’s first competitive match of the 2009 season, the U15s (fielding a team which included five U13s) scored an excellent win in the first round of the cup,. It was going to be a good evening when David Reed took a wicket with the first ball of the match, and followed up with two more in his second. Despite a flat and placid pitch, Southgate struggled to exert much control, with tidy bowling in mid-innings from Alec Noar and William Matthews and an unplayable over from Tom Stevens restricting their score. Another highlight was Freddie Mills in the unaccustomed role of wicket-keeper. We did however let ourselves down with sloppy fielding and backing up – with better discipline in this area they should have scored 12-15 less than they did.
Hornsey’s batsmen took to the field requiring 97 to win off 17 overs and darkness already gathering. Both openers were out quickly but this brought to the wicket the U13 partnership of Liam Baker and Alfie Beswick, who proved to be the match winners. Liam hit 51 before being retired, including ten 4s, with shots all round the wicket and particularly through the covers, and giving scarcely a chance. By the end of his innings he had the bowlers and fielders thoroughly demoralised. Alfie rotated the strike sensibly at first then gained confidence and started to dominate as well, and with Rufus Pope at the other end was there to hit the winning runs in almost complete darkness.
Congratulations to Hugh Matthews on making his debut for Ho

24 Apr 2009 : Hornsey U11 V Winchmore Hill - Middlesex Cup
Hornsey 92-3 off 20 overs (Jack Bruce 22*, Tom Waine 14)
Winchmore Hill 94-3 off 11 overs (1 wicket each for Cormac Haughton, Joe Smith & Jack Bruce)
A disappointing loss in the Cup to a strong Winchmore Hill side. Hornsey U11 in fact contain five Under 10s and Hornsey batted well against an accurate attack. Only 38 runs off the bat but 54 extras, inevitable at this level, but it was a tricky pitch if the bowling was fast and straight which it generally was. In reply, Winchmore Hill batted very well, and ran superbly between the wickets. Hornsey bowled badly, very few straight balls, and fielded as if half asleep.
The U11s are now free to concentrate on the league.

11 Apr 2009 : Passing of a Hornsey Legend - Roger Pearman
It's very sad to report that Roger Pearman died on Thursday 9th April.
Roger was probably the greatest batsman ever to play for Hornsey, playing for the Club from 1958 to 1973. The only rival for this title is Rusi Cooper who this year was reunited with Hornsey CC some 56 years after he returned to India.
Roger is the clubs' leading run scorer with 20,191 runs and was pre-eminent in London club cricket in the late 1960s. He scored 32 centuries for Hornsey (another record). This was an era when Hornsey was one of the best clubs in London, if not the best, and Roger was its' best player. He scored 1,000 runs every season from 1960 to 1971, his best being 1966 when he scored 1,994 runs (another record) at
62.31, including 7 centuries (another record). As a slip fielder he was unparallelled, taking 50 catches in 1968 (another record) and 325 in his career (another record).
Hornsey debut 27th September 1958 vs Dulwich, at Tivoli Road, aged 15, scoring 7. Highest score 165* vs Beckenham on 28th July 1962.
The following appreciation was written by Tony Dey, eminent Hornsey CC historian, in the 1970s
From 1958 to 1974, he made 20,191 runs with 32 centuries. This fantastic record speaks for itself. A right hander, his sense of timing is so good that he is able to play the ball away to either side of the pitch with facile ease. All bowling comes alike. His wide range of stroke play has been a joy to watch. Whether driving, hooking, cutting or glancing, his feet have remained perfectly positioned and
the ball has sped away. He is a first rate runner between the wickets. He made his debut for Middlesex in 1962 at Newport and did sufficiently well to head the Middlesex averages. His best performances, however, have been for Hornsey. In every season from 1960 to 1971 inclusive he scored over 1,000 runs, failing by only six runs on one occasion to reach 2,000. From 1966-71 he was captain. A
brilliant fielder, especially good in the slips, he was a more than useful change bowler. The highest of his centuries was 165* vs Beckenham. His records may well stand for all time.
It's hard to underestimate his contribution to the history of the Club. He played 8 games for Middlesex between 1962 and 1964 and then represented the Minor Counties in the early 1970s, with only moderate success, surprisingly. He was later chief executive of Derbyshire CCC.
Hornsey CC will be represented at the funeral.

23 Feb 2009 : Fabulous Hornsey CC 1989 You Tube Footage
Taken from BBCs local news in 1989, a 3 minute report about 17 year old Adam Gilchrists time with Richmond CC. There are interviews, net footage and some match footage. The match footage is against Hornsey.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARE4RDqARNk&feature=related
The clip is a very good one of all time leading Hornsey catcher prowling at square leg, and then we have the current President, Chris Waite, wheeling away from one end (at a pace a little less than we were led to believe?).
The date of the match is 5th July 1989 and it's actually in the Middlesex Cup.
The large fella fielding the ball at mid off is none other than Rupert Pyrah, the keeper Geoff Ellis and the sharp bowler from the pavilion end with the whirlwind action is none other than first class cricketer David Boden. That's John Sutherland standing at Waitey's end
Boden 9-1-51-2
Waite 9-4-18-2
Richmond 207-5 off 45 (Gilchrist, Bowled Waite 11, batting for 46 minutes)
Hornsey 87 all out off 35
Hornsey team Disco, Vujnovich, Paulas, Otto, Boden, Allen, Brown, Thakur, Ellis, Waite, Pyrah
A month or so later Hornsey played Richmond at home in the league.
Richmond 173-4 off 53.1 match abandoned due to rain
Gilchrist c Thakur, bowled Otto 55, dismissed in 49th over, so kept very quiet.
