07 Jul 2008 : Hornsey U15 V Islington - Match Report - July 2008
U15 League – Hornsey beat Islington by 41 runs

Hornsey 121-9 (T Bacon 34, T Stevens 21, R Devenney 16)

Islington 80 (J Morris 4-2, J Goldberg 3-7)

Hornsey easily overcame Islington for the second time this season. The batting order was varied for this match, with Rob Devenney and Jack Goldberg dropping down to 5 and 7 respectively. This allowed excellent contributions from Tom Stevens, with 21, and Tom Bacon, proving the U15s' answer to Owais Shah, with 34, and at the end of the innings Adam Nickless-Wright with 11*.

When Islington batted, Hornsey, with David Reed and Adam opening, dismissed the two openers quickly. Islington then put on 60 for the third wicket, creating a glimmer of hope before Hasan Ameer broke the partnership with his first wicket for Hornsey. Thereafter Jack and Jamie Morris took control, with the latter taking four wickets for two runs off 2.3 overs, ending the Islington innings in the nineteenth over. This was a strong all-round performance and the team thoroughly deserved a second successive win.

Thanks to James Coombs for umpiring, and Zinzan and Barbara for scoring.

07 Jul 2008 : Hornsey U17 V Hampstead - Match Report - July 2008
North Middlesex U17 beat Hornsey U17 by 9 wickets.
Hornsey 66 all out,
North Midd 67 for 1

With 10 players, 2 of whom were injured , it was always going to be difficult to match North Midd's highly competitive team .Still, everyone had a bat and got involved with the fielding to try to limit the damage.

Thanks to James Coombs and Barbara for helping out.

07 Jul 2008 : Hornsey U11 V North Middlesex (Friendly) - Match Report - July 2008
U11 Friendly: Hornsey U11 beat North Middlesex by 55 runs.

Hornsey 152-5 off 20 overs (Matthew Budgett 35, Ben Reed 18, Joe Light 12*, Richard Footman 11, Jack Bruce 10 retired)

A comprehensive victory over North Middlesex by the U11s. Excellent batting by Matthew Budgett after a decent start by Jack Bruce and Patrick Haughton, despite some kamikaze running. Ben Reed, Richard Footman and Joe Light then scored well. The fielding was excellent. Oliver Toohey took two catches and U11 debutante Joe Macadam sealed the win with a direct hit run out of the last ball of the innings.

07 Jul 2008 : Hornsey U11 V Stoke Newington - Match Report - July 2008
U11 League: Hornsey U11A beat Stoke Newington by 15 runs.

Hornsey 90 all out off 15.1 overs (Richard Footman 56)

Stoke Newington 75 all out off 19.3 overs (Oliver Toohey 4-3-7-4, Tom Waine 4-0-24-3)

A sensational victory over title rivals Stoke Newington keeps Hornsey in with a chance of winning the division. Recovering from the almost unbelievable start of 7 for 5 off 4.4 overs, Hornsey somehow managed to accumulate 90 runs. Richard Footman hit a first 50, 56, to make up for the fact he ran out two of our best batsmen on consecutive balls for 0 having faced a combined 1 ball between them. We were very close to 15 all out, but the openers were seen off and the back-up bowlers were off the pace. Extras 20, next highest score 6. And almost 5 overs were left unused. Inexcusable.

Then Jack Bruce (4-2-6-0) and Richard Footman (4-2-10-0) bowled really good opening spells to put Stoke Newington behind the clock. They had some competent bats and they just couldnt get the ball away. Oliver Toohey and Tom Waine then cleaned up as they got behind the clock and had to swing the bat. Oliver took 4 wickets to make his season figures against Stoke Newington 9-19 off 8! Three run outs were a just reward for good fielding and it was a high class performance in the field. Great catch by Alex Robinson at mid off from a drilled drive.

The last match of the season is against unbeaten Primrose Hill Because our match against them earlier in the season was rained off, if we beat them next week, we will be top of the league. The match is in the Hub at Regents Park on Wednesday 9th July, 6pm start. All spectators welcome.

07 Jul 2008 : Hornsey U15 V Brondesbury - Match Report - July 2008
U15 League: Hornsey lost to Brondesbury by 10 wickets

Hornsey 89-8 (J Morris 35) off 20 overs; Brondesbury 91-0 (J Goldberg 0-15) off 14.1 overs

The U15s suffered their worst defeat of the season at the hands of Brondesbury, with whom we had tied in the home fixture.

When Hornsey batted, the standard of Brondesbury's bowling was generally high, although we did not make things easier by losing two early wickets to shots played across the line to balls that were right on target. Wickets fell relentlessly as the innings progressed, and the only counter-attack was mounted by Jamie Morris with an excellent hard hitting 35, assisted for a time by Vijay Dale (making a welcome return to Hornsey) and Alex Robson. Although this took the score to 89 we were at least 30 short of what was needed to challenge Brondesbury's batsmen.

And so it proved. Hornsey's cause was not helped by the absence of Tom Bacon and Freddie Mills and by Callum Foy's only being able to bowl one over before his persistent back injury reasserted itself. The best Hornsey bowling performance came from the spinners, Jack Goldberg and Rob Devenney: Jack bowled tightly (4 overs for 15 runs) and although Rob was more expensive he troubled the batsmen persistently and had a couple of sharp chances put down. Nonetheless Brondesbury remained within their comfort zone and won with nearly six overs to spare. Hornsey's fielding started off well (Tom Stevens stood out in particular) but became more ragged as the score mounted.

A disappointing result after a couple of excellent wins.

24 Jun 2008 : Hornsey U15 V North Middlesex - Match Report - June 2008
U15 League: Hornsey beat North Middlesex by 4 wickets

North Middlesex 134-4 off 20 overs (J Goldberg 2-14, F Mills 2-17)

Hornsey 135-6 off 19.4 overs (J Goldberg 60, R Devenney 22, T Bacon 20*)

This was a match which ebbed and flowed throughout, with a thrilling ending and a great win for Hornsey.

North Midd's batting was largely untroubled, to the extent that by the 15th over they had reached 103-1 and looking set for a big score. Jack Goldberg and Freddie Mills then took wickets in quick succession and exposed the fragility of North Midd's line up by restricting them to only 35 runs off the last six overs. Nonetheless 135 was a target that we failed to reach in matches earlier in the season.

Hornsey started their innings strongly with Jack Goldberg and Rob Devenney taking the score to 86 without loss by the eleventh over, with a required run rate at that point of 6 per over. Rob was then bowled; in the following over Jack, attempting an uncharacteristically risky shot, followed suit. The scoring rate slowed (6 runs came off the next three overs) and Jack reappeared briefly as a runner for Callum Foy, but three more wickets fell, so that when Tom Bacon strode to the crease we needed 28 to win off three overs. Following good work from Tom and David Reed we still needed 13 off the last over, and the fielders scattered to the boundary.

With Tom on strike, the first ball was driven for 2; the second went to the man at deep square leg, then straight through his legs for 4. The third went for 1 then David was run out attempting a second. With six runs needed off the last three, Tom smashed a 6 straight over midwicket and the match was over amid scenes of jubilation.

This was a particularly satisfying conclusion as we had tied or lost a couple of matches in similar circumstances, and a tribute to the team's self belief.

24 Jun 2008 : Hornsey U10 V North London (Cup) - Match Report - June 2008
U10 Cup: Hornsey U10 beat North London U10 by 114 runs

Hornsey 133-1 (net 128) off 16 overs (Tom Waine 17 for once out, Jack Bruce 13*, Oliver Toohey 11*)

North London 44-6 (net 14) off 16 overs (Joe Macadam 3-2-2-1, Oliver Toohey 2-0-3-1, Jack Bruce 2-1-4-1, Ben Waine 3-0-6-1, Suffyan Gaffar 2-0-7-1)

In U10 cricket it's 8 a side, 4 pairs batting for 4 overs each. You stay in if you are out, and lose 5 runs for each dismissal.

A fabulous performance by the U10s in the Gubby Allen cup. Only one dismissal in the whole innings, a needless run out, is a recipe for success, coupled with straight bowling. North London conceded 65 extras, Hornsey only 29. As 3 of the 8 man team are only U9s and one is an U7, we are in good shape for this and future years.

24 Jun 2008 : Hornsey U11 V North London - Match Report - June 2008
U11 League: Hornsey U11 beat North London B by 73 runs.

Hornsey 167-4 off 20 overs (Richard Footman 40, Matthew Budgett 22 retired, Jack Bruce 15, Patrick Haughton 16 retired, Ben Reed 13 retired, Oliver Toohey 10 retired)

North London B 94-9 off 20 overs (Jack Bruce 2-2-0-3, Joe Light 3-1-11-2, Alfie Rudman 3-0-14-2, Tom Waine 2-1-3-1, Ben Reed 2-0-6-1)

A comprehensive victory over North London B puts the U11A side up to second in their league. Most of the batsmen had crease time. Richard Footman was in good form and was close to the first 50 in Under 11 history, before being out to a very good catch. The bowling was very good. Alfie Rudman hit the stumps with the 1st and last bowl of the first over the innings; Jack Bruce took 3-0 and Joe Light also bowled a double wicket maiden. The North London scorecard had an odd look to it. One batsman was 59*, there were 31 extras and eight batsmen got a duck! The fielding was sharp. The one slightly disappointing thing was that North London were 57-9 off 13 overs and the last pair managed to bat comfortably for the last 7 overs, as Hornsey relaxed a little too much.

24 Jun 2008 : Hornsey U11A V North London Muslims - Match Report - June 2008
U11 League: Hornsey U11A beat North London Muslims by 38 runs.

Hornsey 116-8 off 20 overs (Jack Bruce 21, Patrick Haughton 15)

North London Muslims 78 all out off 19.2 overs (Jack Bruce 2-1-6-3, Tom Waine 2-0-6-2, Silk Brade 2-0-4-2, Richard Footman 2-1-6-1, Ben Waine 2.2-0-11-1)

A comprehensive victory over North London Muslims keeps the U11A side at second in their league. An excellent opening stand of 50 between Jack Bruce and Patrick Haughton got Hornsey off to a got start but the batting faded away after that against an accurate attack. The opposition fielding and catching was excellent. Hornsey, however, bowled and fielded very well themselves and never looked in danger of losing despite conceding 15 runs in the first over!

24 Jun 2008 : Hornsey U9 V Hampstead (Friendly) - Match Report - June 2008
Under 9 Friendly: Hornsey beat Hampstead by 96 runs

Hornsey 169-3 (net 154) off 20 overs (Jack Bruce 16*, Sam Huston 16*, Dempster Fawden 13 for once out, Terry Fawden 12*, Joe Macadam 12*)

Hampstead 98-8 (net 58) off 20 overs (Nick Green 2-2-0-3, Joe Macadam 2-1-4-2, Alistair Hall 2-0-5-1, Tom Waine 2-0-5-1, Jack Bruce 2-0-16-1)

An easy win for the U9s against a disappointing Hampstead side. The match was played to "Gubby Allen" rules, batting in pairs for 4 overs, losing 5 runs for a dismissal. All players to bowl 2 overs only. A very humdrum win that was never in doubt, highlighted by a spectacular six over mid on by Terry Fawden, complete with celebration akin to Pietersen reaching 100 in the deciding Ashes test! Nick Green opened the bowling and struck twice in his first over.

These U9 boys are red hot and need some superior opposition!
