At last – news on Winter Nets for Colts!!

Adrian Fawden has arranged for winter nets to take place at Holloway School, a specialist Sports College. Their brand new sports facilities this year include a large Sports Hall and a number of cricket nets.

Parking/Location:
Holloway School is located on Hilldrop Road between Camden Road and Brecknock Road. Parking for parents and direct access to the cricket nets are available in Carleton Road. The only difficulty with parking would be if Arsenal were playing at home but this is unlikely on a Thursday night. The closest tube stations are Tufnell Park on the Northern Line and Caledonian Road on the Piccadilly Line. Bus routes that can be used to go close by are 4,17,27,29,43,253,259,271,390.

Times :
Every Thursday from 10th January 2008 to 20th March 2008 inclusive except for the half term week, Thursday 14th February 2008.
(Total 10 sessions)

6 - 7pm –for colts aged between 8 and 11 (i.e. U9, U10, U11B and U11A)
7 - 8pm - for those aged between 12 and15 (i.e. U13 and U15).

The facilities will allow us to have both conventional cricket nets and skills practice /quick cricket areas going on simultaneously.

Other sessions being planned:
As I said on a previous mailing, we will have use of the St Aloysius Sports Ground (Hurst Avenue N8) on Monday and Wednesday evenings in addition to the club ground- so we can arrange more matches. Two U11 matches can be played simultaneously on these pitches, so hopefully all the colts at the club will get match experience. It is also anticipated that we will play some friendly matches at the start of the season to prepare for the league and cup games.

Hornsey CC is in the process of setting up an academy for a small number of older players (by invitation only). This is likely to take place on Monday evenings at Holloway School and will involve professional 1-1 coaching. In return for this, players will be asked to help out with coaching at winter and/or summer nets. More on this next month.

Hope to see you all soon,
Best wishes and thanks to all those who sent me a cheque earlier in the year,

29 Dec 2007 : Commitee News
Syed Ahmed is the new 2nd X1 skipper for 08 - and will also be supplying tracksuits, caps and shirts for the new season . He is off to Pakistan shortly to oversee the production. Syed was of course vice captain last year and we are delighted that he comes in after Dave Coventon who was not available for 08 and did an excellent job in 07.

29 Sep 2007 : Ash Ollennu - Cricketing History
Mr AKN Ollennu, otherwise known as Nii's dad has an excellent cricketing pedigree. He played his schoolboy cricket for Lancing College, whose averages appear in the "Public Schools" section.

He appears in Wisden for the seasons 1965 through to 1968, four years in the 1st XI a remarkable feat probably not bettered by anyone at Hornsey.

Wisden 1965 referred to him as a "cheerful rotund customer from Africa, a leg break bowler eminently fitted to scare the life out of boy opponents"

His bowling record was as follows (in the format overs-maidens-runs-wickets-average):

1965 129.4-23-475-23-20.65
1966 135-20-497-22-22.50
1967 160-28-684-40-17.10
1968 164.2-20-610-19-32.10

His batting record was as follows (in the format innings-not outs-runs-highest score-average):

1965 Did not qualify (less than 100 runs)
1966 17-2-253-52*-16.86
1967 12-2-148-42-14.80
1968 13-3-176-33-17.60

His best year was 1967 when he was picked for the Public Schools XI against the English Schools Cricket Association on 2nd August at Lord's. He did not bat and had figures of 6-2-13-3, despatching future first class cricketer Michael Heal.

The next day, 3rd August 1967 he played at Lord's for MCC Schools vs Indian Schools (who included future test players the Armanath brothers and Syed Kirmani), scoring 4 and recording figures of 7-1-25-0.

Mr O, good to have such a fine cricketer on board at Hornsey (albeit in a driving/supporting role!)

The winner of Middlesex's search for a spinner is Hornseys own Charlie Joseph, which is great news.

Charlie is immediately taken on to the Middlesex Academy Spinner coaching scheme to be coached by John Emburey.

13 Sep 2007 : London County Cricket Club's Search for a Star competition
After seeing off thousands of aspiring fast bowlers and spinners UK wide, young Sheldon Greenland has made it to the final round of the London County Cricket Club's Search for a Star competition.

Sheldon totally impressed the ex test players and professional coaches and he will get the chance to bowl a further 12 deliveries at Lords on Saturday 15th September to further stake his claim.

HORNSEY COLTS CRICKET

Please note that there will be NO colts cricket on Friday 27th July due to ground unavailability.

There will be Friday practice on Friday 3rd August and Friday 10th August and then the outdoor season ends.

Numbers drop off considerably when the school holidays start and the sessions will be a little more relaxed and will concentrate on games of Kwik cricket etc. It will also give some of our younger players a chance to have a formal net and introduce them to the hard ball.

11 Jul 2007 : Hornsey U13s vs North Middlesex B - July 8th - Match report
North Middlesex 155-4; Hornsey 40 all out

Hornsey suffered a heavy defeat in their last league match of the season to a strong North Midd side.

We started well with some tight bowling and two early wickets, one a spectacular caught and bowled by Adam Nickless-Wright, making his Hornsey debut. North Midd however then put on 100 for the third wicket, with some excellent hitting. Their task, however, was made easier by two dropped catches and wayward bowling (we conceded 23 in wides). The highlights were Adam’s bowling (1-23 off four overs), consistently good fielding from Freddie Mills and a solid performance behind the stumps from Oscar Ayyadi.

Making the target we had been set quickly slipped out of reach, with Freddie out in the first over and David Reed departing shortly thereafter, run out. Several further mixups between the batsmen ensued, leading to three further run outs. In contrast to Hornsey’s bowling theirs was accurate and consistent: the only resistance was shown by Alec Noar, who batted for most of the innings, and Lewis Strain, who had the dubious honour of hitting Hornsey’s only boundary. In the end the lower order batsmen did well to bat through all but two balls of the 20 overs.

Thanks to Joe Marshall (and Patric) for scoring, and for Bertie Mills who stepped into the batting line up as number 11 having already played in the U11 match that morning.
