27 Dec 2006 : U13s vs Winchmore Hill and Barnet, December 9
Hornsey won the toss and decided to bowl first against a strong Winchmore Hill side.

Winchmore Hill reached 42-1 off the first four overs, helped by a large number of wides bowled by Hornsey.
David Reed then came on, and with highly economical bowling (2 overs, 9-0) helped stem the run rate with Harold Winslet, only 29 runs coming off their 4 over spell. Tom Stevens then bowled an encouraging spell of 2 overs, 11-0 (his 2nd over only going for 2 runs), with Alex Robson (1 over, 9-0), before Harold completed the innings with a third over, giving him figures of 3 overs, 34-1, setting Hornsey a competitive 107 to win in 12 overs.

Hornsey bowled an enormous 20 wides, gifting the opposition 40 runs (wides were their top scorer)!

Hornsey got off to an encouraging start . Both Tom Ralston and Freddie Mills were retired(32* & 30*), and Liam Baker reached 14 before being run out in the last over, with Harold being stumped for 5 on the last ball of the innings. Hornsey fell 9 short of their target, with 99-2 in their 12 overs.

Hornsey started afresh against Barnet, and were sent in to bat. Tom R was run out on a suicidal run for a duck on the fourth ball of the innings, and left Hornsey at 4-1(2 wides having been bowled) at the close of the first over. Freddie again acted as an anchor (32 retired), David made 6, Tom S 6 as well, Alex 7 not out, and Harold an encouraging 25, setting Barnet 101 to win.

The Hornsey bowling tightened up a little, but through some good hitting from Barnet's openers (31 retired and 30 retired respectively), they were on track after 6 overs (the halfway point). More tight bowling from David (2 overs, 9-0), left Barnet with 20 to make in the last three overs. Hornsey conceded 16 runs in the next over, and despite some excellent fielding, Tom S could not restrict Barnet to the 4 runs needed in 12 deliveries, with Barnet getting home with 10 balls to spare by 10 wickets.

Freddie had figures of 2 overs, 19-0, William Matthews 2 overs, 18-0, and Harold 2 overs, 23-0.

Thanks to Adrian Fawden for stepping in as umpire for both matches.

27 Dec 2006 : U13s Winter League vs Mill Hill Village and North London
Hornsey (75-3) lost to Mill Hill Village (81-1);
Hornsey (92-2) beat North London (89-5).

This was the first experience of indoor winter league matches for all the Hornsey players - and the umpire and scorer.

We played first against a strong and competitive Mill Hill side. Mill Hill won the toss and put Hornsey in to bat first. Unfamiliarity with the score and disciplines required in this type of match (12 overs, 8 a side) meant that 75-3 looked respectable, the highlights being 25 from Tom Ralston and 19 from Harold Winslet. In the event, however, this proved inadequate, and Mill Hill passed our total with more than three overs to spare. Mill Hill then went to beat North London even more easily.

The players learnt from the experience and were much tighter and more aggressive in the second match. North London batted first and were restricted to 89; pick of the Hornsey bowlers were Harold Winslet (who also fielded impeccably) with 0-6 off two overs and David Reed with 1-14, including an excellent caught and bowled.

Hornsey's opening batsmen got our innings off to a strong start, with both Tom Ralston and Freddie Mills reaching 30 before being retired. It was left to William Matthews to score the winning runs with eight balls to spare.

Overall, this was a pleasing performance, considering the novelty of the format and the fact that many of last season's strongest U13s have moved up to the U15 side. Many thanks to Lakshmi Hewivasenti for standing in as scorer.

The next matches will be on Saturday December 9th against Barnet and Winchmore Hill.

19 Nov 2006 : Club Captains News - November 19th 2006
COLIN NASH

You will recall that in the last Club News I scanned a copy of the scorebook from Colin Nash's only Club ton, 118* vs OMT in 1962. I asked Colin to see if he could name the XI. Colin came back with 13 names, of whom 8 played.

Colin the team was Nash, Simpson, Whitehead, Wicking, Cox, Savege, Marden, Coster, Berry, Dimond, Webber. You missed Savage, Marden and Webber and chose 5 who didnt play (Martyn, Bacon, Clarke, Brown, Sims).

CLUB COLOURS

From the Club's foundation (1870) until 1902, the Club colours were "Dark Blue and White". In 1902 they changed to "Crimson and Blue", and in the 1930s they were changed to the current colours of "Maroon, Blue and Silver Grey". The colours soon to be debuted on a limited edition Club Blazer, only 5 of us ordered and they are being tailor made as we speak. There is still enough material for one further blazer if anyone is interested. The previous blazers (and only one survives) were made in the Club's previous colours.

WAR MINUTES

Some very good minutes from committee meetings in World War I. Puts current committee minutes into perspective in terms of overall importance to life in general! Example from last committee meeting "James Coombs to take forward the ECB's Chance to Shine Programme". Compare this to the resoultion proposed at Committee meeting 7th March 1919. "No person shall be eligible for future membership who is an enemy subject or, being a naturalised British subject, is of enemy birth. Enemy subject means a person being a subject of Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Turkey or such other country as may hereafter be at war with Great Britain". Passed at subsequent AGM by 13 votes to 2, and as far as I can tell never revoked. Presumably if we turn up an Iraqi fast bowler this winter we may need to amend Club rules to allow him to play.

PHOTO ARCHIVE

A shockingly ugly 1978 1st XI pictured here in front of the old pavilion. Spotted are a first class cricketer (front left, Kevan James) but also making an appearance on the photo of a current Hornsey player some 28 years later. It's fair to say the individual has aged remarkably well.

I can only name 5 or 6 of these guys. Can someone please email me everyone's name.

COLTS NETS

There are two sessions, one on Highgate Wood school for our younger colts. Expertly run by Fawds with help from coaches Joel Gregory, Ben Gillings and Scott Haughton. Friday nets at Highgate School for the older colts with expert coaching from Matt and Sanj.

MATT WILLIAM

Matt will not be playing for Hornsey next year because of other (non-cricket) committments. We are really sorry to lose Matt but he will be continuing his excellent colts coaching role. I hope to be able to persuade him to play the odd game over the course of the season, but it sounds like he has a pretty full diary. Matt made a major impact last year to our Colts programme and we thank him heartily. We have not, however, seen the last of him, I'm sure and it's great news that he will be continuing his coaching role.

22 Oct 2006 : Table Tennis Competition
Joel Gregory is trying to arrange a table tennis comp at the cricket club.

The format will be a singles tournament, each match consisting of three 'first to 21' sets, with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser advancing to the bar to buy the winner a beer. The competition will culiminate with a grand final, commening after the play-off for third. The fixtures will be pulled from a hat at the beginning of the night before play commences.

There will be a trophy up for grabs for the winner.

It should be good fund-raiser for the club so an entry fee to the competition will be charged.

If you're not too confident with your table tennis skills and you wish to participate, still come along and make full use of immaculate bar facilities whilst cheering on the competitors.

Contact Joel (bassjag@hotmail.com) if interested.

16 Oct 2006 : Ally Pally Fireworks Display 4th November
Dear All,

Come down to Hornsey to watch the Ally Pally fireworks display on Saturday 4th November, it's a fantastic display and you get a perfect view from the warmth of the Clubhouse!

The bar will be open from about 5pm serving drinks.. mulled wine, coffee, tea, red and white wine, beers, soft drinks for children etc.

The BBQ will be lit at around 5.30ish to serve delicious hot-dogs, chicken and vege burgers.

Ally Pally fireworks start at 7.30pm and any of you who live in the area know how busy the traffic in Crouch End, Muswell Hill and Wood Green can get around that time, so please feel free to get to Hornsey as early as you like.

If you could give me an indication if you think you would like to come along that would be much appreciated.. last time we watched the display from Hornsey clubhouse the mulled wine ran out which was very disappointing to lots of us! Having a rough idea of how many people are coming will hopefully avoid that situation.

Please feel free to forward this to any friends or family who may wish to bring down even if they are not club members

Hopefully see you there.
